The story of the film is set in a village of Chhattisgarh (then Madhya Pradesh) which has prevalent caste discrimination. It starts with the landlord talking to the Purohit (Priest), and later with his wife Dulari regarding how he wants to take Charandas (who belongs to the [Satanami] community) to court for land acquisition.
