Nighttime. Patrick has just lost his job. On his way home, he vents to his mother on the phone, but after walking into a deserted alley... he immediately gets mugged. Dave appears with his knife. Patrick hands over his wallet but not his cell phone (no one hangs up on their mother, right?). After a few moments, however, Carlos appears too. And so does his gun.
